‘Way to punch down’! Sarah Silverman’s ‘sex change’ video ticks off trans tweeters

Feminism strikes again!

I got a sex change to avoid the wage gap: http://t.co/Ut0YOwvtjX

— Sarah Silverman (@SarahKSilverman) October 8, 2014

Silverman thinks “society owes working women nearly $30 trillion” because sexist wage gap and stuff. So she’s joined forces with the National Women’s Law Center for a campaign to “crowdfund the wage gap.” Naturally, she tapped into her rich comedic talents to help gin up support. This is the result (warning: NSFW):

Glad I'm at work and can't watch the Sarah Silverman wants to be a man bullshit.

— Abbielzebub (@zeroanaphora) October 8, 2014

Yeah, consider yourself lucky. Because we watched it, and it’s awful.

@SarahKSilverman A female millionaire complaining about the so-called 'wage gap' is funnier than your act.

@VanityFair @SarahKSilverman How juvenile, VF. (Unfollowed)

Sarah’s used to getting major love for garbage like this, but we’re guessing she didn’t plan on pissing off a group of people with which liberals assume they have a free pass:

Not one person on @SarahKSilverman 's team had the balls/ovaries to say "hmm this sketch mocks trans peeps" …

— Diana_B (@Diana__Barboza) October 8, 2014

Yeah … Silverman’s video is horrible for several reasons. It’s crass, vulgar, and, honestly, just not funny.

Can we all agree that Sarah Silverman is problematic and not actually funny? #BuellerBueller

— Bartosz Scheller (@BScheller_) October 8, 2014

But members of the trans community and supporters are offended on another level, and they’re speaking up:

Oh @SarahKSilverman I love you so much. But this video is a knife in my trans heart. Didn't ANYBODY suggest trans people deserve better?

— Jenny B. (@JennyBoylan) October 8, 2014

@SarahKSilverman I love you, so what's up with the joke? Trans people are less than to society and you doing this doesn't help.

— Dmitri Arzoomanian (@DmitriArzoo) October 8, 2014

@SarahKSilverman Really, a trans joke? Not appreciated at all. Comedy should punch upwards, not down.

— Marcy Cook (@marcyjcook) October 8, 2014

@marcyjcook @SarahKSilverman Sadly they managed to dig at both trans women and men. "I'm a woman because vagina!" "male surgery is a laff!"

— Megan McCheesen (@McCheesen) October 8, 2014

I'm disappointed in @SarahKSilverman for cheapening trans health struggles to make an otherwise valid wage gap point: http://t.co/DSzcIEt0xK

— Zack Ford (@ZackFord) October 8, 2014

@SarahKSilverman um you do realize trans people have more trouble finding work than all cis people. Way to punch down. Ugh!

— Artemis Julia (@Pinkham_Artemis) October 8, 2014

Sarah Silverman made a transphobic ad today http://t.co/FDf1HiWKtW but it's for feminism so I guess it's GREAT or whatever

— K Joffre (@meanhood) October 8, 2014

Guess you missed the whole convo of how transphobic this is RT @MotherJones: Ladies, Let Sarah Silverman Convince You to Get a Sex Change…

— Laurasaurus (@crafting_change) October 8, 2014

@SarahKSilverman I appreciate most about you that your caring shines through the shit. But not this time. #translivesmatter Please fix it.

— Gallimaufry⚓ (@waiting4thevan) October 8, 2014

@SarahKSilverman Come on. Please stop using trans people as a punchline.

— Red Riding Hannah (@gregariousgecko) October 8, 2014

Hey, @adweek. Let's talk. You really should not get an award for being transphobic. http://t.co/9o2CXKfcWm

— Robyn Kanner (@robynkanner) October 8, 2014

@msnbc @SarahKSilverman thanks for supporting her "comedy" about transgender people. You screwed this one up. @MHarrisPerry

— Libby Walters (@loretayoungslks) October 8, 2014

@nwlc @SarahKSilverman Was the idea, ah, screw all those trans people, who cares about them anyway? OR did you just kind of forget we exist?

— Jenny B. (@JennyBoylan) October 8, 2014

I don't know what @SarahKSilverman has been thinking lately, but joking about quads on #snl, now trans ppl. Not cool, not funny.

— Mary Catenacci (@Mary_J_McKay) October 8, 2014

@msnbc @nwlc @SarahKSilverman Wow. That was some good factual information in a terribly transphobic and anti-sex-worker context.

— Pax and Re-Creation (@cindikn) October 8, 2014

Okay yes fight the wage gap but that Sarah Silverman bit is predicated specifically on mocking trans people. Plz stop putting it in my TL.

— Connor Goldsmith (@dreamoforgonon) October 8, 2014

@SarahKSilverman what were you thinking, doing that #transphobic ad with @nwlc? Did it occur to you this would slash open emotional wounds?

— Boi Middler (@BoiMiddler) October 8, 2014

New @nwlc wage gap ad is incredibly transphobic & demeaning to several groups directly affected by…the wage gap! @SarahKSilverman #ows

— OccupyPhoenix (@occupyphoenix) October 8, 2014

@SarahKSilverman TRANS PEOPLE ARE NOT A PUNCHLINE! If I could slap you through the screen, I would definitely do so.

— SJ Landsknecht (@Saturn500Jared) October 8, 2014

Hey @SarahKSilverman – your transphobic "joke" regarding the #wagegap was not funny. #Trans people are #NotYourPunchline cc: @nwlc

— ❤Adina's Mashiara™❤ (@pansgrrl) October 8, 2014

Another #wagegap: @SarahKSilverman Makes more money in one week than most trans people do in a year. @nwlc #NotYourPunchline

— ❤Adina's Mashiara™❤ (@pansgrrl) October 8, 2014

I need to get away from twitter for a bit before my blood pressure gives me an aneurism. Oh, and FUCK YOU Sarah Silverman! Fuck you NWLC!

— ❤Adina's Mashiara™❤ (@pansgrrl) October 8, 2014

and this…THIS is fucking inexcusable. fuck you @SarahKSilverman #TWTransphobia https://t.co/VQudQh712u
