This Now-Viral Picture of Lemons Could Help You Detect Early Breast Cancer and Potentially Save Your Life
f asked to talk about the signs of breast cancer, most people could tell you that if you feel lumps, you should make an appointment with your doctor. But did you know there are actually 12 signs of breast cancer that you should be keeping an eye out for? It’s true! And while that may seem like a daunting task, there’s a clever viral image that can help you identify all 12 signs. Hint: it uses lemons!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
You’ve probably already seen a lot of pink ribbons floating around your social media feeds. Raising awareness is great, but there’s nothing particularly medically helpful about a pink ribbon.
The Worldwide Breast Cancer organization decided to make a viral image for Breast Cancer Awareness Month that could help people actually detect signs of breast cancer.
The image features 12 lemons in an egg carton, each of them representing one of the 12 signs.
The infographic shows not only what cancer symptoms look like, but also details what some could feel like.
For instance, a lump usually feels “hard and immovable like a lemon seed.”
That’s not the only lemon-related infographic the organization has created.
This one provides a cross-section of a lemon to show what the inside of a breast looks like. It also uses everyday items to describe the different anatomical parts of a breast. Milk lobes, for instance, feel like soft peas.
The organization found that using everyday objects to stand-in for actual breasts is helpful in communicating specific information while also avoiding censorship.
After the viral success of the KnowYourLemons campaign, the Worldwide Breast Cancer organization is now releasing an app.
Their aim is to help people everywhere feel better able to detect the signs of breast cancer. It will provide helpful information and help users stay on top of their regular screening appointments.
Don’t forget to do your own self-exams at least once a month!

It only takes a few minutes and is one of the easiest things to do in the world.
Know your lemons, people!
