Has the Selfie Reached Its Peak?

, ,

In the past few months alone, the self-portrait (a.k.a. selfie) movement has spawned a TV show, a music video (not to mention spinoffs from politicians) and an Oscars meme.

Let’s not forget #FuneralSelfie, #PresidentialSelfie and #ButtSelfie. So it’s safe to say that we’re reaching a saturation point. They hit a “dazzling apex” and suffered a “tragic demise,” according to the folks in charge of the Webby Awards, an Oscars for the Internet of sorts, which was hosted by comedian and actor Patton Oswalt on Monday in New York City. The selfie was proclaimed dead during the ceremony with an “In Memoriam” video (above).

Mashable also had a selfie station set up on the Webbys red carpet, where the hysteria for selfies was still alive and well.
