A curious sight welcomed the citizens of Los Angeles on Saturday, May 21. A space shuttle tank, dubbed ET-94, wasdriven acrossthe California city, from Marina del Rey all the way to Exposition Park, where the tank was reunited with the space shuttle Endeavor.
ET-94, which weighs almost 29,500 kilograms (65,000 pounds) when empty, is the only remaining flight-qualified tank from the Space Shuttle program, and it was gifted by NASA to the California Science Center.
Although it reached its destination with no problems, it still hasa shorter trip to make as its final home is yet to be built. The science center is planning to construct the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, which will be 60 meters (200 feet) high, so that ET-94 and the Space Shuttle Endeavor can be positioned in the launch configuration.
Beginning this week, the tank will be restored to its original state and members of the public are invited to watch the work that will continue for the next three years.
Below, you can see some amazing pictures of the bulky tank making its way through the streets of LA, a similar journey to that made by Space Shuttle Endeavorfour years ago.
