Another day, another Internet outrage over something you probably didn’t even know you were supposed to feel outraged about.
Today it’s a shirt, specifically a Walking Dead shirt by Primark that was pulled for being “racist” and “offensive.”
As you can see,it depicts a baseball bat covered in barbed wire and the phrase, “Eeny meeny miny moe,” which The Walking Dead’s Negan said as he picked out his victim in the show’s Season 6 finale.
On the show and how most people know it the line is followed by catch a tiger by his toe.
Apparently the rhyme has an unclear history, and some earlier versions did include a racial slur, as tiger was replaced by the N-word, which is what caused the complaint.
Acustomer named Ian Luncraft complained to Primark and said that he and his wife were “shocked” when they saw the t-shirt, and called it “fantastically offensive.”
“This image relates directly to the practice of assaulting black people in America,” Luncraft said. “It is directly threatening of a racist assault, and if I were black and were faced by a wearer I would know just where I stood,” he added.
After the outcry, Primark pulled the t-shirt from stores and issued the following statement:
Of course there’s reaction and backlash to the backlash, with people saying it’s ridiculous that the shirt was pulled.
