The Cold War is now a distant memory for most people, but it was a time when total destruction could have devastated entire nations at any moment.

While saving everyone was an unlikely scenario if nuclear war did break out, American government officials decided that they were going to try. During the early years of the Cold War, they installed hundreds of air raid sirens in major cities all over the country.

One of the most popular was the Chrysler siren, which was powered by an 8-cylinder engine. This design still holds the record for loudest sound ever produced by an air raid siren.

Not only were these sirens loud, but they were also incredibly creepy.

That is certainly the sound of impending doom. I’m glad I wasn’t around when the Cold War unleashed its unique brand of terror on society.
