The Concept Of An Underwater River Is Freaky Enough, Even Without The Deadly Gases

Considering the vastness (and general creepiness) of the ocean, you’d think that exploring the depths of rivers and lakes would at least be a little bit safer than diving into the deep blue sea.

And as you might have guessed, that’s completely wrong. If you look in the right spots, you’ll quickly discover that these bodies of water can be just as horrifying as the ocean.

Take, for example, the Cenote Angelita, which is a popular diving destination in Mexico. From the surface, it looks like any other body of water. When divers make their way down, however, they discover the truth. Right in the middle of the river flows a toxic current of hydrogen sulfide.

Needless to say, diving experience is required.
