Rick Perry Announces He Will Not Seek Re-Election As Texas Governor
Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced Monday that he would not seek re-election in 2014 at a meeting of friends and supporters in San Antonio.
“The time has come to pass on the mantle of leadership,” Perry said, adding that he was “excited about the future.” Perry, who is the longest-serving governor in Texas history, recently indicated that he would not rule out another White House run in the future. “I will spend the next 18 months working to create more jobs, opportunity and innovation. I will actively lead this great state,” he said. “And I will also pray and reflect and work to determine my own future path.”
The 2014 Texas governor’s race will now be the first open race for the position since 1990.
3. In response to the announcement, many people are tweeting “Adios, Mofo,” a reference to a 2005 interview where Perry famously ended the segment with the phrase.
