Samsung is tapping into the viral, uh, appeal of Laina Walker, a.k.a. Overly Attached Girlfriend, in a new ad in which she personifies your Overly Attached Computer.

Walker convincingly embodies the OAC in a passive-aggressive rap. “Remember all the things we shared? Illegal downloads. I didn’t care. I kept them safe in here for you and played them when you asked me to. I’d hate to see you get all heated if suddenly they got deleted.” The chorus of the song asks the user to “love me again.”

The pitch in the nearly two-minute video, from The Viral Factory, doesn’t come until the end. That’s when the OAC makes a plea for a Samsung SSD (solid-state drive), which would presumably keep such data safe. “Show me ya love me again, OK?” she asks.

Walker’s rise to fame began in early June when her video in response to a Justin Bieber’s YouTube-based sing-off contest went viral. (It now has more than 13 million views.) The video, which features her performing a similar rap, lays out the same passive-aggressive attack: “If I was your girlfriend / I’d never let you leave / without a small recording device / taped under your sleeve I’ll always be checking up on you / Hey, boy, who you talking to? / Spend a day with your girl, I’ll be calling you my husband.”

For Samsung, which has found success in tweaking Apple’s fanboys in recent ads for its Galaxy S III smartphone, hitching its brand to a viral phenomenon carries a lot of potential upside, particularly for the dull SSD category. At the very least, the ad certainly gets the point across about the possibility of your computer turning on you and leaking your data.
