“I’m dreaming of a white president, just like the ones we’ve always had…”

Satirically singing from the perspective of a run-of-the-mill American racist, Randy Newman offers a new song for people to misunderstand and get worked up about…

And here he is discussing one of the difficulties of satire. (Notice that he kindly assumes that if you’re an adult, you won’t have a problem with it.)…

I have some concern that kids will hear this and think, “What is he talking about?” If you have a kid and you try irony out on them, they don’t get it at 7, 8 years old. “What do you mean, you’re dreaming of a white president?”…

It worries me some, particularly because I’ve done Disney and Pixar stuff.  In Toy Story, there’s my voice saying, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” And then here’s my voice singing that I want “A real live white man / Who knows the score.”

I wasn’t even looking for this, but I found one example. Lynching the president is definitely a racist response: http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/09/20/878971/texan-lynches-invisible-obama/

I like how he says this is what he “feels” motivates people, and then concedes that no one actually says this is what motivates them. Mmhmm.

I know it’s satire and the opposite of what Newman believes, but it still took me a second to get there. Satirical first person music means you run the risk of people thinking you’re the actual racist, not the person mocking racism.

“Smelt it, dealt it”, as the young’uns say.

That’s exactly right, Chad! I am a Conervative and I don’t care if someone is black or white, male or female. I care about what they stand for and what they plan to do America. I will be voting for Romney because I believe he can do a better job running this country. Obama has failed and we need another man in office.

I think most people are a little racist, but that doesn’t mean people that opposed Obama did so because they’re racist. BUT there is a lot of racism with regards to President Obama and even his family. Some of it’s pretty disgusting, and it’s a shame that there are still people in this country who think like that.

short people got no reason to live. they got little hands, little eyes waling around telling great big lies short people got no reason to live

It is possible to disagree with Obama without being racist I hope. I would have voted for Colin Powell or Condeleeza Rice if they had run, and so would most of the Republican Party. If you’re voting for him just because he’s black…that is as racist as voting against him just because he’s black.I have not met any conservatives who disagree with him because he’s black. The fact that he was ultra liberal and ran for president after a half term in the Senate was enough
