Filmmaker hired to promote new Ben Stiller movie spends entire budget on disaster relief in the Philippines

Popular independent filmmaker Casey Neistat recently received an email from the marketing team at 20th Century Fox asking if he’d like to work with them to promote Ben Stiller’s new movie “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.” He responded with his pitch: You give me your money and I’ll go spend every penny of it to help the folks in the Philippines whose lives are in upheaval after the worst Typhoon in recorded history.

    It was a great initiative. I was surprised that it was only $25,000 to promote a Hollywood film. With the tightening of funds in the West, you can physically see how it trickles down to the other side with only 2 bus loads of food, especially in the Philippines where food costs are lower. That said, this was a beautiful union between commercialism and compassion. I hope more Hollywood Films will take the same initiative and be more impactful to the communities they film in and the audiences they produce for.

    A great effort, and I’m sure the money is actually doing more to promote the money via this video than it would with a traditional ad. It shows how $25K is just a drop in the bucket for the amount of help these people need.
