English spelling reform through history — When it’s worked and when it hasn’t

You have almost certainly heard at some point in your life, someone (maybe yourself) complaining about the annoying inconsistency of English spelling. Such complainers are not alone. Many people through history have tried to rein in the idiosyncrasies of written English.

And have these would-be orthographical reformers succeeded? Yes and no…
