Pretty cool looking, but: This might not be appreciated by someone who has actually watched their house burn… Also, did they consider how it might actually make some people think the building is really on fire? So not cool…..

is it bad that it never crossed my mind about the traumas people that have been in fires or anything making it illegal of the sorts? sorry my mind was too busy thinking how freaking cool this was 🙂

It seems likely, I’d say certain, that before activating this installation, all kinds of communications must have happened with local authorities and so forth. It’s not a prank. You can read about the project here:http://www.designboom.com/weblog/cat/10/view/12678/isabelle-hayeur-fire-with-fire.htmlI think it sounds interesting.A real fire would be a whole different, noisy, smoky, scary scene. Notice how passersby in the video are totally unconcerned.

Holy cats, watching that made me so nervous.

I live right around the corner from here and walked by this building almost everyday while it was still “on fire” in the early months of 2010. I think the whole thing was executed quite effectively in that it looked just fake enough to quickly allay any real alarm, but still realistic enough to sustain the illusion for any person who wished to get absorbed in contemplation of it.I do remember seeing, on different occasions, startled passengers pressing their faces against bus windows as they rode past, as well as many passersby stopping to stare for a long time, taking pictures and videos. Even over a run of several months, it was an oddly bracing sight to see each day, this silently burning building, burning all day and all night.A few months later, a new spa opened up right next door and a gym a few doors west – but this building’s still as run-down as ever and it’s not on fire anymore either. The funny thing is, about this time last year, I was listening to a lot of John Piper sermons on MP3, downloading them whole preaching seasons and book series at a time. And many times, I would be listening to these sermons while walking home at night, looking up to check the burning building before I turned the corner onto my street.I found your site after reading some of your posts on the Desiring God blog and have been a regular visitor here for the past year or so. Today’s my first time leaving a comment, though, because I really was quite surprised to see this burning building, on fire again at twentytwowords. So, thanks for this post and much appreciation for the whole site as well!

It’s art. You don’t make art to please people. It would be unfortunate that it might upset people who have had to watch their homes burn, but that should not be considered. Your actions cannot be dictated by the need to please others – they would no longer be your own actions.

Or once people get used to seeing this, they might not report a building that actually is on fire.

Might be illegal. Should be illegal if it is not already.

That’s right up there w/ the Christmas Yule log on dvd. Watch a fire burn on your tv on Christmas morning… If there’s no smoke, there’s no fire.
