All these moviegoers would be dead if they’d been in a car instead of a theater
This new PSA from Volkswagen simulates a car crash for an unsuspecting crowd at the movies in order to shock them and the thousands who are now watching it on YouTube into keeping our eyes on the road…
The message was sent using the location based broadcast function of GSM networks. Since it is a broadcast, they didn’t need any personal info like phone numbers. They had to work with the cell phone network provider in that area and probably set up a femtocell for the cinema so the message was only sent to the moviegoers.See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_Broadcast and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Femtocell
I’m glad I saw this elsewhere first since you gave it away 🙂
so how did the theatre send a message to everyone’s phone at the same time? did the people give their phone numbers to the theatre beforehand, or did they acquire their phone numbers through some other means? could this be a breach in privacy?
