    One tradition they forgot was paper chains. I know for a fact that elaborately cut paper chains, lanterns, bells and other assorted shapes are traditionally strewn from the ceilings of British homes for the holiday. And, not for Christmas but for new years, a lump of coal is carried out the back door of the home just before midnight by a dark haired man of the family. Then, just as the new year is announced, it is carried through the front door. Supposedly to bring luck and prosperity for the new year.
